Like wildfire, the news spread that Jesus was doing miracles and healing many people of all kinds of sicknesses. Crowds of people followed Him nearly everywhere He went. One day, when Jesus returned to one of the towns by the Sea of Galilee, a man came to Jesus and desperately begged him to come to his house. The man’s young daughter was very sick and was dying. Jesus began to follow the man, but as he went, the crowd of people tried to keep following Him, bumping and pushing to get close. Suddenly Jesus felt someone touch him. He stopped to find that a woman had reached out to touch His garments, believing she would be healed—and she was! While Jesus was still talking to the woman someone came to tell Him that the little girl had already died. It was too late, or was it?

  1. How old was the girl who was sick? 
  2. How do you imagine the man, Jarius, felt while the crowd was making it take longer for Jesus to get to his house to heal his daughter? 
  3. What did Jesus say when they found out the little girl was dead? Why do you think He told them that?
  4. Who did Jesus allow to be with Him in the house when He went to the little girl? Why do you think He didn’t want anyone else to come in?
  5. What did Jesus mean when He said the little girl was “sleeping”? Can you think of any other places in the Bible where God says being dead is like sleeping?
  6. How do you think the girl’s parents felt when Jesus caused her to wake up from being dead? Is there anyone you know who has died who you are looking forward to seeing again when God brings them back to life in the resurrection?

Jesus picked twelve men from among His disciples to travel with Him and to be taught by Him firsthand. Others also followed Jesus throughout the region as He preached the gospel of the Kingdom of God, performed miracles, and healed the sick.  Often, large crowds came to see Jesus and to hear Him preach. They wondered who He could be and what was the meaning of the things He said. His disciples believed that He was the Messiah, but did they really know what that meant? They would soon begin to see.

  2. What is a parable? Why did Jesus speak to the people in parables? 
  3. What happened after Jesus and the disciples set out to sea? What was Jesus doing? 
  4. Why do you think the disciples wanted Jesus to wake up? What happened when Jesus woke up? What does the word “rebuke” mean? 
  5. How was Jesus able to calm the storm? What were the disciples’ reactions when the storm ceased? Do you think they were surprised?

Jesus performed many miracles, and His fame grew throughout the region. The Romans were also very much aware of what Jesus was doing. Jesus and His disciples traveled to Capernaum where Roman soldiers were stationed. A Roman centurion, a man who commanded one hundred soldiers, had a servant who was very sick and about to die. When the centurion found out that Jesus was in town he sent some people to get Him knowing this may be the only chance his servant had to be healed.

  3. Why did the centurion send his friends to tell Jesus not to come into the house?

Jesus obeyed God and kept the Sabbath each week just like the Ten Commandments say we should. However, the Jewish leaders, especially the Pharisees, added many do’s and don’ts to how to keep the Sabbath. These extra rules made it hard for the people to keep the Sabbath properly. Many people followed Jesus to be healed or to listen to Him teach and the Pharisees were jealous. They thought if they could catch Him doing something wrong the people would not follow Him anymore. One day, they thought they had caught Jesus breaking the Sabbath.

  1. When was the Sabbath created? Who created the Sabbath? 
  2. What was the penalty for breaking the Sabbath (Ex. 31:15)? Breaking the Sabbath is a serious matter in God’s eyes. When the Pharisees accused Christ of breaking the Sabbath, it was very serious.
  3. What were Jesus and His disciples doing in the fields on the Sabbath? Why did the Pharisees think they were breaking the Sabbath? 
  4. What did Jesus do when He went into the synagogue that made the Pharisees angry? Why do you think the Pharisees were so upset? 
  5. Does God allow acts of mercy and kindness on the Sabbath (Matt. 12:11)? What kinds of things can we do on the Sabbath that might make God happy?

The Jews were looking for a messiah. However, Christ came as a lowly carpenter, a common person in their view, and many people, especially the religious leaders, had a hard time believing Jesus could be the One sent by God. The prophets of old foretold that the Messiah would cause the deaf to hear and the blind to see. People started to hear that Jesus was able to heal those who were sick, so they came from all around to see if He would work a miracle for them. There were so many people who came to see Jesus that one day when some people brought a man who could not walk, they had to get a little creative so the man could get close to Jesus.

God picked Mary and Joseph to be the parents of His Son on earth. They were both from the family of King David, and they both obeyed God’s laws. They took care of Jesus as a child, and taught Him as best they could. God guided and directed the family, and as Jesus grew, He started to learn about who He was and what He was on earth to do.

As the news spread announcing this special miracle, a few people began to realize that He was no ordinary boy.

Many years had passed since the Jewish people had returned to their homeland since the captivity. But the people were still not free. The land of Judea was under the rule of the Romans whose empire stretched far and wide across the continent. The Jews were waiting for the Messiah to save them from the Romans as many of God’s prophets had taught for hundreds of years before. God’s plan was to send His Son as the Messiah. He also planned to send a prophet to prepare the people to hear the Messiah’s message. 

The story begins in Jerusalem where there lived a woman named Elizabeth who lived with her husband Zacharias. They were both very old, and they had no children. One day, Zacharias went to the temple to perform his duties as a priest and an angel appeared! The angel had a special message for Zacharias and Elizabeth about the coming Messiah and the man who would prepare the way for His arrival.

Discuss:

  • What was the message the angel gave to Zacharius? How did Zacharias respond to the message? 
  • What did Gabriel tell Zacharias to name his son? What happened to Zacharias when he left the temple? How did he tell his relatives what his son’s name would be?
  • What was the message the angel gave to Mary? How did Mary respond to the message? 
  • What was Mary to name her son? What does the name mean?
  • What happened when Mary came to visit her cousin?
